Redlands Equilyte is a balanced mixture of essential salts required for the maintenance of electrolyte balance in performance horses. Developed by leading veterinary equine specialists, Equilyte is designed to cater to the climatic extremes that exist in many countries.

Redlands Equilyte: Acid or Alkaline?

Equilyte is an alkaline salt, which helps balance body fluid acidosis that develops with exercise. During training and racing, all horses lose essential body electrolytes through sweating. Redlands Equilyte is suitable for all conditions, except endurance exercise.

Why Horses Need an Alkaline Salt

When a horse exerts itself during training, it builds up body acids. Excess acid, known as acidosis, can cause sluggish blood flow, tied-up syndrome, and dehydration. NEVER USE AN ‘ACID’ SALT MIX.

No matter how hard your horse works or how much it sweats, stick to Equilyte. You can increase the daily dosage as needed but never feed an acid salt mix, as it can worsen acidosis.

How and When Do Electrolyte Losses Occur?

Horses naturally lose electrolytes through urine, feces, and sweat. These losses increase due to:

  • Work and exercise
  • Heat and humidity
  • Traveling
  • Excessive sweating
  • Low feed and fluid intake
  • Periods of inactive growth
  • Nervous tension
  • Illness (e.g., scouring)

Electrolyte losses are further complicated by fluid losses. The greater the stress on the horse, the greater the loss of electrolytes and body fluids.

Signs and Symptoms of Electrolyte Deficiencies

A horse suffering from electrolyte deficiency may exhibit:

  • Lack of vitality
  • Cramping and muscle fatigue
  • Dehydration and heat stress
  • Nervousness
  • Acidic urine and water retention

Without a strict daily intake of Redlands Equilyte, an electrolyte imbalance can negatively affect body fluids, kidney function, and muscle cells, leading to:

  • Premature fatigue
  • Reduced stamina
  • Loss of appetite
  • Poor recovery after exercise
  • Weak performance

Redlands Equilyte – All Year Round

It is a misconception that electrolytes are only needed in hot weather. Electrolytes should be maintained all year round.

  • In winter, administer the same quantity as in summer.
  • Adjust dose rates based on sweating levels in summer.
  • Monitor fluid intake, as horses tend to drink less in colder weather, leading to dehydration.

Sodium Bicarbonate & Racing Regulations

Clinical tests show that doses as high as 50g in the morning feed only elevate sodium bicarbonate levels slightly, well below limits regulated by racing authorities. Redlands Equilyte is safe to use and does not contravene racing rules when fed as directed.
